Serbski Sejm demands honest respect for the Herero and Nama from the Federal Government of Germany
In a letter to the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and to the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas, the Serbski Sejm - the parliament of the Sorbian/Wendish people - welcomes the fact that the Federal Republic of Germany is facing up to its history, taking responsibility and is currently preparing an apology regarding the genocide of the Herero and Nama.
„However, based on our own experiences, it is unacceptable to us when the affected peoples themselves are not involved in decisions on an equal footing, but instead are acted upon from above, over their heads. We demand from the German government to take the Herero and Nama peoples seriously as partners and to include them into direct negotiations on the nature and extent of the admission of guilt. This is the only way to credibly overcome the German colonialism, characterised by racism, which led to the genocide of the Herero and Nama“, says the Sejm Member of Parliament and member of the Legal Affairs Committee dr. Měrćin Krawc / Dr. Martin Schneider and adds: „As Sorbs/Wends, we feel a special bond with the Herero and Nama due to parallel experiences with German cultural hegemony and, as citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany, we are highly committed to solidarity with them and to rejecting patronising foreign domination.“
