43. Session of the Serbski Sejm
On 29 June, the Sorbian/Wendish parliament Serbski Sejm met for its session in the „Pearl of Lusatia“ Grodk/Spremberg in the multi-generational centre „Bergschlösschen“.
Firstly, the Serbski Sejm's education concept was officially announced, which calls for a self-governing Sorbian/Wendish education system and is now available to the public.
As part of the programme of talks for guests, members of Natura Spremberg explained their various concerns about the plans for copper mining (due to various environmental impacts and in particular the threat to the healthy local water supply) and the wind farm in the municipal forest. This was triggered by the Serbski Sejm's comprehensive statement on the copper project from September 2023 .
Furthermore, the current 15th report of the Federal Government on its human rights policy was acknowledged . A shadow report is to be drawn up on this, as the concerns of the Sorbian/Wendish people have not been sufficiently taken into account.
The main focus of the meeting was the second reading of the draft treaty between the Sorbian/Wendish people and the German state (federal and state governments). The next step will be to discuss and examine this with experts in European minority and nationality law. Representatives of the state will also be invited to attend.
The next meeting will take place on 24 August in Dešno/Dissen.
